How to think about life cover

A simple rule many advisors use: your life cover should be enough to clear debts and replace several years of income for your family. Pure term insurance does this most cheaply. Investment-linked plans like ULIPs and endowments mix cover with savings — useful for some goals, but always check the charges and returns separately from the protection.

Frequently asked questions

Who actually needs life insurance?

Anyone whose income or care others depend on — a spouse, children, or ageing parents. If no one would face financial hardship without your income, you may not need it yet.

How much cover should I take?

A common starting point is 10–15 times your annual income, adjusted for existing loans and your family’s needs. Use it as a guide, not a hard rule.

Is term or investment-linked better?

They solve different problems. Term insurance maximises protection per rupee. ULIPs and endowments bundle investing with cover, which can dilute both — compare them on their own merits.
